Did You Know?

What is Fire?
Fire is a chemical reaction involving rapid oxidation or burning of a fuel. It needs 3 elements to occur: Fuel, Oxygen and Heat.
The air we breathe is about 21 % oxygen. Fire only needs at least 16 %. Therefore a chain reaction can occur when the three elements of fire are present. Fire occurs when this rapid oxidation or burning takes place.

What is Foam?
Fire fighting foams have been introduced around the 19th century. The original foaming agents were known as “ chemical foam” because foam bubles resulted from a chemical reaction.
Chemical foam has been replaced with mechanical foam, being protein or synthetic based.

How does Foam work?
Foam is ablanketing and cooling agent. It is used for extinguishing flammable and combustible liquid fires, as well as preventing release of flammable vapors and cooling sources of reignition.
All foams extinguish fire in four ways :
    - They smother the fire and prevent air form mixing with flammable vapors.
    - They supress flammable vapors and prevent their release
    - They seperate flames form the fuel surface
    - They cool the fuel and the adjacent metal surfaces.
